Frequently Asked Questions

1
What is Valley Roots Housing?
Valley Roots Housing is a community-focused, non-profit housing provider created to bring deeply affordable, stable homes to the Annapolis Valley. Our goal is to offer housing that supports dignity, connection, and long-term wellbeing. We work with local partners, equity-deserving communities, and government funders to create safe, inclusive living spaces for people who call the Valley home.
2
What is co-operative housing?
Co-operative housing (co-op housing) is a model where residents are members, not tenants. Members help shape the community by participating in shared decision-making and taking part in the life of the co-op. Housing charges are set to cover operating costs—not to create profit—so co-op housing often remains more stable and affordable over time. Each co-op is guided by values of community, participation, and mutual support.
3
Who can apply to live in the new co-op housing?
Our goal is to welcome individuals, families, seniors, and people from equity-deserving groups who need deeply affordable, stable housing in the Annapolis Valley. Specific eligibility is based on household size, income ranges, and unit availability. Once the application process opens, we’ll make the eligibility criteria clear and easy to understand.

4
When will applications open?
Construction is underway on our first housing project. Applications will open once we finalize unit details, timelines, and selection processes. The best way to stay informed is to fill out our Expression of Interest form. People on that list will receive the full application package first.
5
How do I express interest in becoming a member of the co-op?
You can complete our Expression of Interest form on this website. This helps us understand your household’s needs and allows us to contact you as soon as full applications are ready. Completing the Expression of Interest form does not guarantee housing, but it ensures you stay updated as the project progresses.
6
How much will the rent (housing charge) be?
Housing charges will depend on the unit type and final operating costs. Because we are a non-profit co-operative, charges are designed to be as affordable as possible and are not influenced by the private rental market. More detailed information will be shared when full applications open.

7
Will there be affordable or income-based units?
Yes. Valley Roots Housing is committed to deeply affordable housing. Some units will be income-based or supported through government affordability programs. Details will be provided once we have final confirmation from our funders and partners.
8
What kind of involvement is expected from co-op members?
Co-ops thrive when people contribute in ways that match their abilities and interests. Members help shape decisions through meetings, committees, and community contributions. Participation can look different for everyone—some help with administration, some with gardening, planning events, or supporting neighbours. You won’t need special training; just a willingness to be part of a supportive community.
