About Us
Working Together for Stronger Communities
Valley Roots Housing’s mission is to help create affordable, attractive, energy-efficient, and sustainable housing in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. We do this by supporting community groups that share our values and by developing affordable housing ourselves. Our goal is to help people who, because of poverty, mental health challenges, discrimination, or other barriers, are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. We also aim to create job and skill-building opportunities through our projects—whether in trades training, property maintenance, or support services.

Our Story
Valley Roots Housing Association grew out of several years of work by the Homeless No More initiative, which brought attention to homelessness in the Valley. We officially became a non-profit organization on February 22, 2022.
Our first board meeting was held on March 31, 2022, where we set a goal of helping create 100 affordable housing units. At that meeting, we also agreed that meeting this goal would require a range of housing options, such as multi-unit co-ops, tiny homes, accessory dwelling units, boarding houses, and other creative solutions.
About the Board
Community Comes Together for Change
Initially, Valley Roots was set up as a representative board structure with directors nominated by collaborating Valley NGOs (The Portal Youth Association, the Valley Community Learning Association,
Canadian Mental Health Association, Community Inc., and Open Arms) but it always allowed for individual community members to serve as directors when expertise and values aligned.
At the 2025 AGM it was determined that all board directors would be community members with opportunities for NGOs to sit ex-officio.
